I have multiple sclerosis -- do I qualify for disability benefits?

In recent years we have heard a lot about multiple sclerosis (commonly known as MS). This condition, in very basic terms, has to do with the body’s immune system attacking the body’s central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of optic nerves, the brain and the spinal cord. It can be really hard to diagnose MS because there are no symptoms, lab tests or physical findings that alone can determine if a person has the condition.

Common symptoms include fatigue, numbness or tingling in different parts of the body, overall weakness, and walking difficulties, among many others. There are also many less common symptoms as well that can disable a person.

Thankfully, those who have MS may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits if their condition meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability. In the case of multiple sclerosis, the criteria involves fatigue, visual and mental impairment, and disorganization of motor function. If the condition does not meet the criteria, the SSA may still consider other limitations of a person’s MS symptoms as well as other factors.

If your MS symptoms prevent you from working, you may qualify for disability benefits. It’s important to have your symptoms and condition supported by medical documentation. If you are struggling with the symptoms of MS, it can be beneficial to document every step of your medical process. The condition can range in its effect on people but it can be extremely devastating in terms of a person’s ability to do their job. If you are struggling to work while managing your MS symptoms, you may want to discuss your case with an attorney.
